Negative Cut Goalkeeper Gloves, What Are They?

What are Negative Cut Goalkeeper Gloves?

I have to admit I am a BIG FAN of negative cut goalkeeper gloves even though they might not be most goalkeeper's number one choice of gloves.

I am not sure if it's my personal hand shape but they feel so much more comfortable than other gloves. At the moment most goalkeepers tend to go for the roll finger goalie gloves (which is OK if these feel good on you) but I do not like the feel, and also the roll finger goalkeeper gloves always seem tight on my fingers

Negative Cut Goalkeeper Gloves, What Are They?

Maybe it's because I have short stumpy (fat!) fingers that's why the negative cut gloves are better for me, but heh we are all different.

Believe it or not but most people do not know what negative cut goalkeeper gloves are?

So what are they?

Basically the stitching of the glove is INSIDE rather than the conventional outside of the goalkeeper glove. By putting this stitching inside means there is more palm on show which equates to more contact space for the ball.

So thirty years being around goalkeeper gloves, twenty of which I have been a professional goalkeeper and professional goalkeeper coach, so I know my business when it comes to picking the correct goalkeeper gloves.

I remember wearing the negative cut goalkeeper gloves when they first came out and even back then I thought they were a great feeling glove. So if you have short stumpy fingers like me, maybe try these goalkeeper gloves out.

So how do you know if the negative cut goalkeeper glove is for you?

Simple: Try them on!

Just because most keepers wear roll finger today does not mean negative cuts are a bad glove because this is simply not true. Neg cuts are just as good as any other glove on the market.

And if you are like me and have wide thick hands, these gloves will probably be a lot better than the tighter fitting roll finger goalkeeper gloves anyway!

So go and try a pair or two on.

What negative cut goalkeeper gloves would I recommend?

Too be honest this is where I would love to say, 'heh we have a cracking pair in the just4keepers glove range'... but we do not do this goalkeeper glove cut at the moment. However I am trying to persuade all the other coaches I work with to bring out our own negative cut range but up to now this is falling on deaf ears, as like the masses, they all prefer roll finger!

So going back to above, which negative cut would I recommend?

I have mentioned this is many articles, I actually think its wrong for ANYONE to recommend you a glove without seeing your hands first. Because everyone's hands are different, it's wrong and unfair to say a particular glove is correct for you.

Instead what I recommend you do is pick three or four glove companies that have been going for five years plus and see what negative cuts you like, go and try them on and go from there!

Why a company that's five years plus old?

Nothing against the newer companies, even though there are some poor keeper gloves out on the market now that new companies are developing, there are also some brilliant ones!

However by going with a company that is established at least you know the chances are you will get your money back if the gloves do not meet your standards and you want to return.

I hope this advice helped you on how to pick the best negative cut goalkeeper glove?
